Air China became the country’s first major airliner to ban the shipping of shark fins as cargo on Friday, marking a major victory in conservation efforts in a region that has been identified as a major importer of the fins from around the world.
It is estimated that China is a major consumer of the over 73 million sharks that killed for their fins each year.
“It’s a bold move, and this is likely to have a huge and lasting impact on shark populations and marine ecosystems worldwide,” WildAid of Hong Kong activist Alex Hofford told the Washington Post.
AirChina joins 35 other airlines and 17 international shipping companies around the world that no longer accept shark fins as cargo.
