A drone videographer captured footage of a pod of orca whales, including what appears to be a mother and her calves, preying on a a large shark off the coast of California earlier this week.
Photographer Slater Moore recorded the footage from his drone while on a whale watching tour with Monterey Bay Whale Watch.
“These whales are typically smaller in size than the Bigg’s or transient killer whale type and they had several very young calves with them!” MBWW said on its official Facebook page.
The video appears to show a large female adult orca whale catching and killing an approximately 10-feet seven gill shark and tearing it into smaller chunks for the younger members of the pod.
According to a report by UPI, Moore didn’t realize that he had captured the interaction until he later reviwed his footage.
“The view from the boat was awesome but the drone gave us all an exciting alternative view,” Leandra Vickers, who was a spectator on that day’s tour, commented. “Amazing day that I will never forget.”
