Fins Attached Marine Research and Conservation is offering a free online seminar with guest speaker Dr. Mauricio Hoyos on April 16 at 4:00 p.m. EST. The presentation, which will focus on the great white sharks of Mexico, is free for registrants. According to the official release, Hoyos has studied sharks since 1998. Among his main lines of research are nursery grounds, reproduction, movement patterns, habitat use, foraging ecology and behavior of sharks. Based at La Paz, he has studied several species of sharks at different locations in the eastern Pacific: Guadalupe Island, The Gulf of California, The Revillagigedo Archipelago, Clipperton, Cocos Island and Malpelo. He is part of the scientific committee of several marine reserves in Mexico. In Guadalupe Island he has been doing research since 2003 to date. Dr. Hoyos has remained active in shark conservation outreach and education, giving talks to groups as young as elementary school children as well as high school and university students. During his career he has received several awards (Golden Diver, Shark Researcher of Year and Sea Hero) for his work on shark conservation and awareness. Also, he has published several articles in scientific international journals, book chapters and one book about the White Shark. |
