Grab your leather baseball cap and a cold six-pack of Narragansett Lager. The original bad fish is back. The iconic movie Jaws may be getting a reboot soon.
According to a report from wegotthiscovered.com, Universal Pictures has begun initial development on a new installment of the Jaws film franchise with Steven Spielberg rumored to serves as the movie’s executive producer.
No further details are available on whether the new film would continue the storyline of the original franchise which ended with 1987’s Jaws: The Revenge, or be a complete reboot, ala the 2017 Ghostbusters film. It is speculated that the new film could be directed by Andy Muschietti, who was behind the successful reboot of Stephen King’s IT.
Jaws is credited with being one of the greatest movies of all time, being ranked in the Top 50 greatest by the American Film Institute. When Jaws was released in 1975 it was a tremendous commercial success. Based on the novel by Peter Benchley, the movie became iconic thanks to the direction of Spielberg and the instantly recognizable soundtrack by John Williams.
It isn’t surprising that the studio would try to capitalize on the recent success of shark-themed creature feature films like The Meg but rebooting the classic tale of the great white shark that terrorizes the quiet beach town of Amity might face some backlash from movie purists. Plans to update the original 1975 classic using CGI technology to overhaul scenes that featured the animatronic shark with a more lifelike antagonist was met with considerable skepticism despite the endorsement from one of the original film’s stars, Richard Dreyfus, who played Dr Matt Hooper the marine biologist.
The big question is though is whether Larry Vaughn is still the mayor of Amity or did the town voters finally get rid of him.
