The conservation group Fins Attached is urging citizens who want to help end the shark fin trade in America to contact their member of the U.S. House of Representatives in support of the Shark Fin Sales Elimination Act.
The bill, HR 737, makes it illegal to possess, buy, or sell shark fins or any product containing shark fins, except for certain dogfish fins. A person may possess a shark fin that was lawfully taken consistent with a license or permit under certain circumstances.
Penalties are imposed for violations under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act.
The bill was re-introduced in January after a similar bill was not brought up for a final vote before the session expired in 2018. If action is not taken before the end of this year’s session, it would require the proposed legislation to be reintroduced in 2020.
