It’s every shark fan’s favorite time of the summer, if not year. Shark Week 2020 is set to begin next week and Sharkophile offers a preview of the largest installment of Shark Week yet! This year, the Discovery Channel is really making an effort to cover all aspects of the shark. This coverage is a breath of fresh air from shark attack recreations of years past.
Will Smith, Shaq, Mike Tyson, and the stars of Workaholics join Discovery for the 32nd installment of the famed television marathon. Airing August 9th through August 16th, this year’s Shark Week will feature a record 24 specials! This year, instead of Sharks After Dark, a special sharky edition of Josh Gates Tonight will recap the specials.
Below is a brief spoiler-free synopsis of all of this year’s specials. Also, below the synopses will be a brief guide on how to access Shark Week without cable.
What to watch Shark Week 2020
1. Air Jaws: Ultimate Breach Off August 9th at 8 pm ET/PT
According to executive producer/director Jeff Kurr “The spectacle of a flying great white, Air Jaws, is the most terrifying and beautiful sight that exists in nature.” The crew of Air Jaws returns to a recently covered hunting grounds to see if the Great White population is rebounding. The team will use decoys, drones, and underwater cameras to count the number of shark breaches in one of Shark Week’s most famous recurring segments.
2. Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef August 9th at 9 pm ET/PT
Sharkophile covers this story here. If I can be honest, I am a little skeptical about this segment since the release of further information. Mike Tyson will go head to head against shark species such as the blacktip reef shark with famed ring announcer Michael Buffer calling the shots. A blacktip reef shark is not what I would call a threatening species, that I would really want to watch Mike Tyson punch. At the 5’9″ and 165lbs profile, I am currently at, I could punch a blacktip and swim away. Apparently, however, no sharks were harmed in the making of this episode. Therefore, it’s possible this may be a fun and harmless episode of Tyson reacting to sharks, which sounds enjoyable. I want this concept to work (bringing a popular culture icon to change the stigma on sharks), but for this one specifically, I need to watch it first before I can give my 2 cents.
3. Shark Lockdown August 9th at 10 pm ET/PT
2020 has been a year for the history books. Arguably, COVID-19 has made one of, if not the, largest impact on the globe so far. Nearly every country has either been under a lockdown or currently remains in lockdown. This lockdown has not stopped shark researchers from trying to save the shark. During COVID-19, researchers in New Zealand built a self-propelled cage. In this special, the cage will be used to explore the mysterious world of the ‘747’s. A ‘747’ is a name given to a female great white shark off of New Zealand measuring over 20 feet.
4. Great White Double Trouble August 10th at 8 pm ET/PT
In Australia, two separate populations of great white shark live in the same area but do not cross mate. An Australian research team explores this mysterious and unusual duality of great white existence as it tries to make sense of the large new wave of shark attacks in Australia.
5. ShaqAttack August 10th at 9 pm ET/PT
After appearing on a previous Shark Week, Shaquille O’Neal is back for more! This time, Shaq is on a mission to find out which shark has the most predatory attack. Chris Fallows, Shark Week veteran, joins Jeff Kurr and Dickie Chivell to search for the largest great white in the world. Recently, the largest great white shark ever was caught on camera in Hawaii, after thoroughly enjoying a whale carcass. This shark was female, however, so not Discovery finds it in its best interest to search for the largest male. an executive producer teases that the team comes face to face with a goliath they name Fred.
7. Extinct or Alive: Land of the Lost Sharks August 11th at 8 pm ET/PT
Shark conservationist Forest Gallante searches for 3 unique species previously lost to science. Dive into the treacherous waters of the Southern Hemisphere for an epic adventure. This is one for the shark conservationists like me, I appreciate that Shark Week believes that the general public is interested in shark species lost to science. I, for one, am interested, and I hope many of you are as well.
8. Will Smith: Off the Deep End August 11th at 9 pm ET/PT
A title that was probably conjured before recent events, Will Smith: Off the Deep End brings you action, excitement, and shark-infested waters. Will Smith is genuinely terrified of sharks, watching him get out of his comfort zone and into the water with large species is sure to be entertaining.
9. Great White Serial Killer Extinction August 11th at 10 pm ET/PT
Witness a brand new scientific discovery for yourself in this special! California sea otter populations are being threatened by an influx of great white shark attacks. To investigate, researchers deploy a sea otter dummy and witness “one of the most spectacular attacks in shark week history” according to the Discovery channel. This sounds like an interesting derivative of ‘Air Jaws’.
10. Monsters Under the Bridge August 12th at 8 pm ET/PT
Citizens of the keys ill feel at home in this special, featuring bridge night dives, genetic analysis, freediving, and underwater scooters in the beautifully clear waters of the Florida Keys. This year, the main crew of Workaholics (Adam Devine, Anders Holm, and Blake Anderson) investigate ‘the ultimate shark party’! The crew wishes to find out what makes so many tiger sharks aggregate here. Is it mating? Pupping? Feeding? Find out in this special.
15. Sharks of Neptune August 13th at 10 pm ET/PT
With no human interactions for the first time in decades, great white shark sharks off Neptune beach in Australia are in prime condition to be studied, according to researchers. Executive producer Tim Kelly hypes that “due to COVID-19, our cameras get an unprecedented look at what great white sharks do when they have the ocean to themselves.”
16. Alien Sharks: First Contact August 14th at 8 pm ET/PT
Sorry, this is not a ‘Witching hour’ History channel special. Better, underwater cinematographer Joe Romeiro and Paul Clerkin go on an expedition to the depths of the ocean to record deep-sea shark species.
