Specialized shark proteins could help researchers unlock new treatments for Alzheimer’s Disease and other degenerative brain disorders.
Danish pharmaceutical company, Lundbeck, announced that are moving on to the next stage of testing for treatments that utilize shark antibodies to help deliver drugs into patients. The new treatment involves bonding developmental drugs to the shark proteins so that they may pass through the blood-brain barrier more easily.
Getting large-molecule medicine past the barrier had been a major roadblock in recent drug development.
Initial research, conducted along with American biotech firm, Ossianix, showed positive results in lab mice. Researchers say that these forms of treatments are still several years from being made available to humans.
