Once a thriving species, Daggernose Sharks (Isogomphodon oxyrhynchus) are now on the brink of extinction. In the past decade alone, their population has declined by 99%. These magnificent creatures, known for their unique characteristics, have become unintentional victims of artisanal fisheries. They are now classified as Critically Endangered, signifying the urgent need to protect them from further harm.
Objective: In this article, we delve into the health status of Daggernose Sharks and explore their ability to withstand various challenges, drawing comparisons with other shark species that inhabit the same region.
Assessing the Health of Daggernose Sharks: Researchers conducted a study in the coastal region of Maranhão, Brazil, where artisanal fishermen incidentally caught Daggernose Sharks. Blood samples were carefully collected from these sharks, and scientists analyzed the serum to evaluate crucial biochemical markers.
Revealing Findings: The study uncovered significant differences in the health of Daggernose Sharks compared to other shark species in the same area. Various markers, such as ALP, ALT/GTP, creatinine, lactate, urea, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, revealed lower health scores and reduced recovery capacity in Daggernose Sharks.
Understanding the Challenges: It is believed that the vulnerability of Daggernose Sharks stems from the impact of fisheries on their evolution. Unfortunately, this has resulted in remaining populations having slim chances of fully recovering. The existing legislation, which mainly includes fishing bans, falls short of providing adequate protection for these incredible creatures.
The Call for Conservation: Given the critical status of Daggernose Sharks, urgent conservation measures are imperative. International collaboration and long-term efforts are necessary to ensure their survival. One vital step is the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) specifically designed to safeguard the species. Additionally, captive maintenance programs can play a vital role in monitoring their health and supporting breeding attempts, aiding their recovery.
Protecting Our Ocean’s Guardians: Daggernose Sharks are not just fascinating creatures; they play a vital role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. As we strive to protect these majestic beings, raising awareness about their plight and the need for conservation actions is crucial.
By working together, we can make a difference and secure a future where Daggernose Sharks continue roaming the ocean, reminding us of the incredible diversity and wonder beneath the surface.
